In the checkout aisle
How cool is this? A company called Hop-On just came out with disposable cell phones.
Works just like a normal cell phone (except you can't get calls, only make them). You can add minutes, turn the phone back for a $5 rebate and chuck the thing in the trash. No contracts or anything. Just buy it and go. Of course, it's version 1.0 with all the limitations a new piece of tech has. The good news: It's only $40 and may be in stores by Christmas.
It's very cool for people who need a cell phone in emergency situations but don't want to pay hundreds a year for a phone they rarely use.
Of course, this must drive law enforcement mad. Now, here's something a criminal can use and then throw away...no contracts to connect a criminal with a phone and, from what I can tell, no phone number that law enforcement officials can monitor via court order.
(On edit: And what else makes this so cool is that if this gizmo catches on, then cell phone companies will have to lower their rates to keep up.)
